She started to sing together with her husband Reutilio and later continued as a soloist singer to become the greatest interpreter of popular traditional music. She visited many Latin-American and European countries and recorded for posterity tens of guajiras and sones. She has passed her knowledge to younger artists. She was awarded the National Music Prize in 2003.
